This tour takes in two ancient cities in a single day: Laodicea, ten minutes from Pamukkale, and Aphrodisias, over the hills in Aydın province.
Laodicea sits closer to Pamukkale than any other major ancient city, and most visitors drive straight past it without knowing what is behind the fence. It was one of the wealthiest cities of Roman Asia Minor, rich enough to rebuild itself after an earthquake without imperial help, and it is one of the Seven Churches addressed in the Book of Revelation. Excavation over the past two decades has uncovered a great deal: two theatres, one of the largest stadiums in Anatolia, temples, monumental gateways and the colonnaded Syria Street running through the centre of the city. The church of Laodicea, uncovered in 2010, is one of the earliest known church buildings in the world.
Aphrodisias, near Karacasu in Aydın, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. Marble quarries in the hills directly above the city supplied a school of sculptors whose work was exported across the Roman world, and that is what makes the site unusual: the buildings and the carving that decorated them are still in the same place.
The stadium at the northern edge of the site is the best preserved in the Mediterranean and held around thirty thousand people; you come in through the entrance tunnel and the whole oval opens out in front of you. The Temple of Aphrodite that gave the city its name still stands in part, converted into a Christian basilica in late antiquity. Between them are the monumental Tetrapylon gateway and the Sebasteion, a double colonnade whose marble relief panels set the Roman emperors alongside gods and personified nations. The site museum holds the statues, portrait busts and carved sarcophagi lifted from the ruins, and it is the part most visitors remember.
This is an archaeology day rather than a landscape one, and a guide is the difference between a meaningful visit and an hour of walking past rubble. Both sites are open and largely unshaded and there is a fair amount of walking at each, so bring a hat, water and comfortable shoes.
