Işıklı is a freshwater lake in the Çivril district of Denizli, ringed by reed beds, willows and low hills. It is one of the richest bird habitats in the country: surveys around the lake have recorded 123 species from 34 families, and a large share of them are covered by international conservation agreements.
From late spring through summer the shallows fill with water lilies, and the day is built around them: the flowers close in the late afternoon, so the timing follows the lake rather than the other way round. Between the lilies and the reed channels, this is a slow, quiet few hours — the opposite of a ruins day.
The tour includes a two-hour private boat trip on the lake, with the boat to your group alone. You glide in among the white lily beds and through the narrow reed channels that border the open water, at a pace slow enough to watch what is going on around you. The boat stops where the flowers are densest so that everyone has time to take photographs, and much of the lake’s birdlife is easiest to see from the water — in the reeds, on the floating vegetation and along the shoreline.
Bring binoculars if you have them and a camera you are comfortable using at distance. Early in the day is best for birds; late morning to mid afternoon is best for the lilies.
