Keloğlan Cave lies at Dodurgalar in the Acıpayam district of Denizli, three kilometres off the Denizli–Antalya road. Until 1990 it was known only to shepherds. After a survey by the Turkish geological survey it was prepared for visitors and opened in 2003, and it is now one of only around thirty caves in Türkiye open to the public.
The visitor route runs for 145 metres through chambers averaging five to six metres in height. Inside there are stalactites and stalagmites, columns where the two have met and joined, fine spaghetti stalactites and sheets of flowstone running down the walls. The cave takes its name from Keloğlan, the bald boy of Turkish folk tales, after a local legend about a shepherd.
Above ground, Acıpayam is canyon and upland country, quiet and largely empty of visitors. The combination is the point of the day: an hour underground among formations that took millennia to build, and open landscape either side of it.
Comfortable, non-slip shoes are essential — surfaces inside the cave are wet.
