Işıklı is a freshwater lake in the Çivril district of Denizli, ringed by reed beds, willows and low hills. It is one of the richest bird habitats in the country: surveys around the lake have recorded 123 species from 34 families, and a large share of them are covered by international conservation agreements.
From late spring through summer the shallows fill with water lilies, and a small boat takes you out among them. The flowers close in the late afternoon, so the timing of the day is built around them rather than the other way round. Between the lilies and the reed channels, this is a slow, quiet few hours — the opposite of a ruins day.
Bring binoculars if you have them and a camera you are comfortable using at distance. Early in the day is best for birds; late morning to mid afternoon is best for the lilies.
