Salda Lake & Kaklık Cave Tour from Pamukkale - Turkish Maldives and the Underground Pamukkale

The white shore at Salda is not sand. It is hydromagnesite, a soft mineral deposit, and the water lying over it turns a shade of turquoise that has earned the lake its nickname, the Turkish Maldives. NASA has studied Salda because its mineral chemistry resembles Jezero Crater on Mars, the site the Perseverance rover was sent to explore.

There is time to swim and time to photograph, and Salda is the most photographed place we go: white shore against turquoise water reads as strongly on a phone as on a camera, and the colour is at its best in the middle of the day when the sun is high. Bring a swimsuit, sunscreen and a hat — the shore is bright and there is very little shade anywhere around the water. Salda lies in Burdur province, so this is a longer drive than our tours inside Denizli, and the vehicle is air-conditioned throughout.

Kaklık Cave

On the way we stop at Kaklık Cave, near Kaklık in the Honaz district of Denizli, known locally as the underground Pamukkale. Calcium-rich thermal water running through a collapsed cave chamber has built white travertine terraces inside it — the same process that made the terraces at Pamukkale, but under a roof of rock. There is a sulphurous smell as you go in, small warm pools stand on the terraces, and stalactites hang above the wooden walkways that run through the chamber.

It is a short stop, around forty-five minutes, and an unusual one to photograph: daylight comes down through the collapsed roof onto white stone, so you get the look of Pamukkale underground and without the crowds. Between the cave and the lake, this is a day built around two very different kinds of white water.
