Laodicea sits closer to Pamukkale than any other major ancient city, and most visitors drive straight past it without knowing what is behind the fence. It was one of the wealthiest cities of Roman Asia Minor, rich enough to rebuild itself after an earthquake without imperial help, and it is one of the Seven Churches addressed in the Book of Revelation.
Excavation over the past two decades has uncovered a great deal: two theatres, one of the largest stadiums in Anatolia, temples, monumental gateways and the colonnaded Syria Street running through the centre of the city. The church of Laodicea, uncovered in 2010, is one of the earliest known church buildings in the world and draws visitors on their own account.
This is an archaeology tour rather than a landscape one. A guide walks you through the site and explains what you are looking at, which on a site this size is the difference between a meaningful visit and an hour of walking past rubble. The ground is open and largely unshaded, so a hat and water are worth bringing.
